Minimalist bedroom decorating trends are currently all the rage for modern apartments or any architectural style that demands a contemporary approach.

For ascetic impact, dark wood floors and furniture are often played off against white or neutral colours on the walls and in fabrics and bedlinens, and colour is kept to a minimum, being reserved only for a few strategic accessories or pieces of art or furniture.

Dark metalwork looks good in such a decorative setting and satin black finished modern metal bed designs lend themselves well to a clutter-free minimalist bedroom scheme, where lines and contrast are the main issues to watch.

For maximum effect, whilst the combination of dark furniture and white walls might be the obvious way forward, a vice versa approach can be equally effective and highly sophisticated.

The contrast of white against a dark backdrop introduces instant mood and ensures that all shapes and lines stand out strongly.

Watch out though for overbearing dark furniture; opting for low and small is invariably a better approach, and to further soften the visual impact of dark objects, grey walls offer a reduced contrast option without spoiling the minimalist effect, whilst drawing the eye outwards.

Keeping storage solutions under-bed or close to the ground will widen the appearance of the room and “lift” the ceiling. And for visual interest, all that is required are a few soft or vibrant colours used with restraint to preserve the pure, clean lines of the room.

Just a few well chosen scatter pillows, scarlet bedlinens, or a brightly coloured bolster will provide those all- essential visual splashes to jazz things up a little.

For those opting for a low bed and headboard combination rather than a contemporary bedstead or platform bed sleeping configuration, then it’s worth introducing colour here. As a wall attached feature a stylish modern headboard design in any number of colour finishes might work well, and for extra continuity, having an upholstered headboard covered with the bed spread fabric will soften the feel of the room whilst introducing a little extra welcome minimalist comfort.
