Purple bedroom glamour

The colour purple has long been associated with glamour, and along with its stable-mate, Scarlet, is often to be found in many a seductive bedroom scheme.

In fact purple has enjoyed something of a re-birth of late, particularly within the fashion industry, and there’s no doubt that when used as the basis for bedroom décor, the effect can be truly inviting and ultra sophisticated.

Ok, so it might be a little over the top for some tastes, but in true European tradition, this noble colour with its royal associations is guaranteed to make an inspired style statement for those who hanker for a little opulence in the bedroom.

Just imagine how a heavy antique Brass bedstead might work in such a setting, the antique patina complementing the purple scheme with snow white bed linens and a rich red bedthrow adding a further touch of luxury and comfort.

Flocked wallpaper might sound a little last century, but in this environment, on one or two walls, the effect might be just perfect – the ultimate in glamorous luxury.

And yet, as with any assertive colour scheme, there are always possible pitfalls and it has to be accepted that it’s generally not a masculine choice, so a clash of opinions is always likely here. Add to that the fact that some purple shades can look grungy in some natural light conditions, as can purple synthetics under certain light sources, and you might be starting to think twice.

Purple is notoriously light- sensitive. It is simply an inherent characteristic of the colour. Fabulous in some lighting permutations, and awful in others.

But whenever purple has been relegated to the “nice, but no thanks” bin, there’s a couple of other colour combinations that come without the pitfalls to create an equally enticing effect with arguably far greater his/her appeal!

Indigo and Orange: Dark indigo, when matched with muted earthy orange or the deep hues of ochre makes for a fabulous colour scheme for a sexy, masculine bedroom, the mix of indigo and autumn reds looking strong and well balanced. A rugged look is possible by using denim and linen for the bed dressings and soft furnishings instead of silks and velvets, and suede-effect paints on the walls would impart a rich matt finish for a truly compelling flavour.

Coffee and Cream: These popular bedroom colours ensure a glamorous colour scheme with a more contemporary twist that appeals to both sexes.

Here too, the final look depends very much on the mix of paints, fabrics and textures, but for a really chic his and her bedroom, try using suede, rich linens and cotton bedding, with a glossy ivory traditional metal bed such as the Alva for a really evocative room style.

For a more feminine take on the same colour mix, chocolate velvets and cream coloured bedlinens and lampshades with some ornate gilt framed mirrors, would be sure to make a seductive style statement. And why not add some crystal chandelier detailing for the ultimate decadent finishing touch?

Perfect!
