More Mediterranean moods….

So…we’ve established our Mediterranean styled bedroom in rich rustic Tuscan decor or a cooler beach theme.

With a simple wooden platform bed or rather more ornately styled traditional metal beds, as the focal point we have the beginnings of a room design that has the makings of makeover genius!

So where do we go from here to achieve that “just right” look that makes the difference between good and simply fabulous?

Of course, like most things in life, it’s those little details that make all the difference, and we all know by now that interior decor is no exception. It’s no good spending time and a fortune on brilliant furniture and colour choices if the whole thing is ruined with the wrong accessories, inappropriate artwork and unsympathetic lighting that destroy the mood.

So firstly, without stating the obvious, avoid at all costs, stark overhead lighting that creates a shadow less, unwelcoming environment and muddles Mediterranean colours whilst flattening the textures.

Instead it’s much better to opt for wrought iron accent lighting in the form of bedside lamps or a pretty iron chandelier above the bed or as a wall feature with controlled dim-able lighting to evoke the feeling of a Tuscan villa.

Adding extra depth and interest with bold Mediterranean accessories such as sculptural artwork and figures can be hugely appealing. Stone pillars and plinths are a great addition to any Mediterranean bedroom, whilst iron decorative fixtures, bolts, catches and curtain poles will all add an authentic rustic charm to the mix.

Layers of vintage white and cream textiles evoke the look of a luxurious Mediterranean beach resort and beachfront chalets, sleeping under a canopy of stars, whilst ornately patterned bedding and pillows and bolsters in earthy hues of terracotta, gold, cobalt blue and plum tones suggest a little opulence in classic Tuscan style.

Complete the Mediterranean theme by bringing the outside, inside with images of nature. This is Tuscan styling detail at its most profound, so a large landscape oil painting of Italian countryside or vineyards or a still life of fruits or olives is a celebration of natural Tuscan bounty and beauty.

A particularly nice touch is to allow room-space for leafy green plants or a small citrus tree on a windowsill, whilst a balcony or terracotta window box might be the perfect home for a host of containers grouped together and filled with passion flowers or herbs.

Here in Britain, if we enjoyed a few more days of summer sunshine, then the finished effect might be just perfect.

But then, even for the most enthusiastic DIY-er, some things are always going to be a little trickier to achieve…..
