It’s not easy to feel romantic when you’re sleeping on a creaky old mattress stuck upon a ghastly old pine bed frame that probably looked tired and old fashioned even when it was new, and unlike many things in life, certainly hasn’t improved with age…

Cash-strapped young couples (and maybe the not-so-young!) often have to settle for less than fabulous furniture, and yet there are ways to avoid bedroom battles when it comes to bedroom style, thus avoiding sleeping alone on the sofa, whilst at the same time enjoying comfort on a budget.

It’s a rare thing to share the exact same design tastes as another, and yet design compromise need not be hard. Quite the converse.

A good start point is to recognise your style, by which we mean your in the plural.

Not always easy if we’ve been used to living a single life but essential nonetheless!

It’s really all about knowing what works for you and your partner and coming up with a compromise that pleases all. If she’s a traditionalist and loves the romantic, cosy look, whilst he’s into contemporary ascetic styling then trouble’s likely to brew. Sleek lines and modern detailing are unlikely to find a happy harmony with intricate styling cues and a glamorous four poster bed.

But with research, shopping around, and more research, a compromise is possible.

Indeed, with a little care, contrasting styles can be hugely appealing and, just like people, opposites often attract. A relationship can blossom when old meets new or contemporary and classic styles comes together.

Choosing colours, styles and textures carefully can yield fabulous results.

When working to a budget, it’s pretty obvious that we need to keep this in mind, but like any good relationship, the bedroom style and furniture should be viewed as an investment. “Put in a little, get a little”

A new decent mattress might seem like a big outlay, but over the period of many years it will more than repay in terms of comfort and blissful nights. After all, how much money do we often waste on stuff that rarely gets used such as clothes and electrical gizmos?

That’s not a criticism that you could level at a good mattress.

Something that’s going to be a companion for a third of our 24 hour day. And likewise for the bedstead.

As the focal point in the bedroom, nothing comes close for style and comfort. A great mattress atop a quality beech sprung based traditional metal beds

or modern metal beds design will ensure nocturnal bliss without costing a fortune.

With vast style and colour choices there’s bound to be a design that has universal appeal for him and her without putting a strain on the relationship.

And after all, with all this comfort , oodles of class, and perhaps a dash of romance, whoever needed a better reason to head for the bedroom!
