There can be little doubt that today’s culture owes much to Roman and Greek influences.
Science, astronomy, politics and the Arts, are all areas of life intrinsically linked with those early cultures which have shaped the world in which we live.
Arguably it is their contribution to Arts and Culture that is considered most relevant. Many of the designs, decorative styles and architectural nuances that we might take for granted, are directly attributable to Greek and Roman influences at many different levels and on a global scale. Translated into modern times, those defining grand designs have a part to play when it comes to interior design and architectural features, and perhaps, not unsurprisingly, the bedroom can benefit from a touch of Roman-esque style for either a romantic or grand flavour, depending on personal taste and preference.
Understated use of earthy colours is used in both Greek and Roman styles. Neutral hues are the order of the day with beiges and browns as the backdrop to the room theme as a whole.
To create a specific look, three shades of light brown should be chosen, with the lightest shade selected to paint the room as a whole. The medium brown is then mixed with glaze on an equal part ratio and then, using a sponge, this layer is applied to create a textured stone effect.
The addition of vertical lines or a more ambitious stencilling/painting project, will give height to the room and suggest the presence of columns, whilst the floor should be of solid weathered wood where budgets allow or natural sisal or jute coverings as great alternative choices.
The most important piece of furniture in any bedroom is, of course the bed and to really add flourish to any Greek or Roman theme, a large traditional Iron Beds with ornate detailing would be ideal.
A Four Poster Bed would also work well, perhaps adorned with light white drapes for a truly romantic flavour.
Accessorising the bedroom will be key to complementing the Greek theme, and whilst marble statuary and sculptures might seem to be the obvious choice, actually a more contemporary and affordable twist can be achieved by the sensitive use of decorative metal wall art.
Liberal use of large squashy pillows and bolsters on the bed and scattered about the floor should complete the look, whilst some subdued mood lighting and careful positioning of a glamorous pair of candelabras atop a chest or dresser is sure to add an inviting feel.
For anyone searching for a bedroom theme that defies convention the Greek and Roman decorative approach is certainly worthy of careful consideration.
Admittedly, far from mainstream and not to all tastes, but in the right context and with a little flair and imagination, a decorative solution with a beguiling ancestry!
