FOR ULTIMATE PUNCH and a truly sophisticated theme consider the combination of black and white to add intrigue and decorative verve to any room.
Unashamedly contemporary and undoubtedly extrovert, a black and white approach to decorating can create a stunning and dramatic effect. There’s an old rule with decorating that suggests “that every room can use a touch of black”. This might seem strange within a room of pastels or primarily softer colours, but there is much truth in this viewpoint. Using black as contrast adds a focal point of colour that grounds, anchors, and brings a sophisticated look to any room.
When black is used in accessories such as light fixtures, window fittings, soft furnishings and trims, or in one bold piece of furniture, it serves to catch the eye and sharpen any decorative theme whilst providing an outline that sets off specific areas of the room or objects. And whilst black by itself is striking, to achieve real drama, the black and white route is the way to go for a fresh, clean and truly elegant look. Indeed black and white can be the perfect combination for a number of decorative styles, and whilst most often seen in more modern interiors where it works well with cool metal features, the pairing is also popular for French Country interiors.
And for anyone who might be reluctant to use solely black and white, variety and a more muted look can be achieved by adding splashes of pink, beige, red, yellow or purple for an equally strident look. Ensuring that black and white remains dominant however, preserves the elegant effect.
In any room a black and white floor is a great start point and the perfect choice might be a beautiful black marble floor set off with tall white skirting board mouldings.
Should this seem a little extreme, white ceramic tiles with a black border would also work, whilst carpet tiles laid in alternating black and white squares would be effective and for a softer look, either black carpet with contrasting white rugs, or visa versa.
Walls painted stark white or a softer off-white shade provide a perfect background for framed prints, photographs and other artwork. Dark wood or painted black frames look great and consider adding a touch of colour with red, gold or pewter accessories.
A small room such as a bathroom or hallway is a perfect place to experiment with a black and white scheme. Black marble countertops, white sinks, and chrome fittings are always a successful combination.
Within the bedroom also the black and white approach can be very inviting, where crisp white linens and a black or stripy valance looks good with contrasting pillows and maybe a comfortable black chair.
If you allow the bed to become the focal point a sumptuous Upholstered bed frame would create a softer opulent feel, whilst a contemporary or perhaps slightly more traditional Iron Bed could be fiendishly successful.
From the Original Bedstead range we’re possibly contemplating black or white iron beds models such as the Edwardian Iron Bed, Winchester Iron Bed, Carie Iron Bed, or Chatsworth Iron Bed.
And for real drama a gleaming chrome beds like the Andreas, Tain, or Bansha would really make a statement. Perhaps our favourite though would be the Tay.
With a stylish contemporary stance, and an assured and sophisticated presence, the black leather and chrome panel combination would surely bring a definitive look to any bedroom where black and white is the dominant decorative theme.
And for seasonal changes, why not have a range of bed throws and cushions in different colours on hand?
Pink, yellow or muted green works well in the summer months, whilst rich reds, and golden and silvers look great during the autumn and winter.
When shopping for fabrics, keep an eye open for colourful prints with touches of black to tie the colour scheme together. Then think about adding more black to the room in the form of lamps, table trims, mats, pillows and hardware. Accent pieces of black iron are very effective in any room and contemporary metal bedside tables with a glass top work well in any black and white bedroom scheme.
With the dextrous choice of black iron candlesticks, light fixtures and decorative accessories such as vases, sculptures and wall frames, an inspired look is assured. In most homes, whatever the architectural bias, the confident use of black and white alone or with accent colours for a less ascetic mood will ensure a simple yet classic environment with a good measure of visual drama, guaranteed to stir the senses!
