Hand tufted

Pocket sprung mattresses that are made the traditional British way, hand tufted to keep fillings in place

You spend at least a third of your life in bed. A good mattress is important for your health, both physical and mental. The Juno range of natural british made pocket sprung mattresses from the Original Bed Company is an investment in your wellbeing. Our pocket spring mattresses are handmade by our trained craftsmen in Corby, Northants.

Each mattress is made from a supportive honeycomb spring system made of the finest high carbon springs. Over the pocket springs we add either soft man made fillings or natural fillings for long life, comfort and ventilation.

Materials include man made fibres, cotton, wool, silk, cashmere, bamboo and horse hair. Each material has a unique function in the layering providing different amounts of durability and softness to the mattress.

The long lasting pin-striped traditional 100% cotton cover gives that traditional look. Being the part of the mattress closest to your skin, it also has an advantage of being all natural.

All our pocket spring mattresses are hand tufted to hold all the components together. Hand tufting prevents the fillings or springs from moving over time.

What are the types of pocket sprung mattresses available?

Our Juno range comprises 5 unique british made pocket sprung mattresses, all available in various sizes. This includes the Juno Original, Juno Wool, Juno Cotton, Juno Silk and Juno Cashmere. Our handmade mattresses are expertly crafted with the needs of our customers in mind. We strive to provide quality and durability.

We designed the specifications of each mattress to make sure each model is comfortable, but each model has a unique identity making it easy to figure out which mattress is good for you from our range.

  • Juno Original - Our most budget friendly option, which we set about to design to be as affordable as possible without compromising on comfort and it delivers a lot of comfort for the price.
  • Juno Cotton - The next step up and moving to a more natural option. This mattress is deeper than the Juno Original and more responsive. The top comfort layers are made of cotton and wool which are really good for comfort, temperature regulation, fire resistance and resilience. We definitely recommend you stretch your budget to get the Juno Cotton over the Original.
  • Juno Wool - The first in our line of mattress which provide all natural fillings. This mattress is very similar in design to the Juno Cotton but we've replaced the man-made fibres with all natural cotton and wool fillings. Natural fillings are still the best at a lot of things, including fire resistance, resiliance, responsiveness and we believe provide the best comfort out of any materials. All the while, being better for the environment.
  • Juno Silk - The Juno Silk also has all natural fillings including cotton, wool and silk. A more luxurious mattress with the silk adding a smooth silky feeling when you lie down. A luxury option when compared to the Juno Wool, but if you lie down on it you definitely feel the difference and this is the mattress to get if you'd like to pamper yourself every night.
  • Juno Cashmere - We set out to make the best mattress we could make, without compromise and using the best materials we could think of. The mattress we designed was the Juno Cashmere. It rivals the best mattresses out there. Horsehair fillings are well known to be used on ultra premium mattresses, the ultimate mattress material for responsiveness and longetivity. Over the horse hair we use cotton, wool and luxurious cashmere for softness and comfort over the horsehair. Horsehair and cashmere, we think make perfect companions for a perfect mattress.

What makes an ideal mattress?

The fine balance of number of springs, spring length and thickness and matched resilient fillings will provide that special feel for a good night's sleep. This balance of the supportiveness of the pocket springs and the soft comfort of fillings leads to a perfect mattress.

Each model in our pocket spring mattress range is designed to maximise comfort given the materials available at that particular price point. We've spent over 20 years making mattresses and selling other peoples mattresses. With our experience, we designed our range to be easy to understand and comfortable at all prices.

As a pocket sprung bed company with a long history, we understand that choosing a mattress is not easy and with the options available can be a daunting task. We've written a guide on how to chooose a mattress, where you can learn how to judge if a pocket sprung mattress is good or not.

What is an ideal mattress firmness? Soft, medium, firm or extra firm?

The Juno collection mattresses are designed to accommodate people of various body types. Each mattress is made to a medium tension which should suit most people and is our recommended mattress tension. We can customise the firmness of all sizes of our pocket sprung mattresses if required, including our double and pocket sprung single mattresses.

How many springs should a pocket sprung mattress have?

Usually anything between 1000 - 1500 pocket springs is what we recommend in a pocket sprung mattress. The more the springs the more independently each point in the pocket sprung mattress conforms to your body. However, after a certain number of springs, increasing the number of springs doesn't have much effect. In our comfort and support tests, anything over 1500 springs didn't show any measurable difference.

We've written a more detailed article on how many springs should be in a pocket sprung mattress if you'd like more information on how the number of springs affects the comfort of a UK made mattress.

What is the advantage of a handmade mattress?

While buying a handmade mattress itself does not guarantee a quality mattress, usually handmade mattresses are made with a lot more attention to detail than other mattresses. The techniques we use to make mattresses are the same techniques that have been used to make good quality British pocket sprung mattresses for many years.

There are many types of mattresses these days, but the basics of a mattress still haven't changed. A traditional British handmade pocket sprung mattress is still one of the best in comfort and durability. Modern imitations are merely trying to replicate the qualities of a handmade mattress at a cheaper price.

New mattresses, however, aren't as sustainable to produce and use. Having sold many types of mattress we decided to become a company that sells handmade mattresses because of these reasons.

Trust us to deliver the best custom mattress in the UK, directly to your door.

How do I clean my mattress?

It is recommended to remove dust from a pocket sprung mattress by wiping with a dry cloth regularly. For any spills and stains it's best to dry immediately. Use a damp cloth to clean as best as possible. If needed, you may use soapy water to damp the cloth.

What is the delivery time of a mattress?
